TRUST THE PROCESS

Artist. Designer. All-around creative. That probably sums up what I do. I drew a lot of horses when I was in elementary school and enjoyed every art class I had the privilege of taking until I finished high school. I love making things. I have explored so many mediums, been a production designer, interior designer, creative director, educator, mom, sister, daughter, friend, dog lover, entrepreneur; born and raised in Iowa, transplanted to New Mexico in 2015, and I'm not finished yet!

Making, in many forms, has been a source of pure pleasure my entire life. Art-making became a way to process my ever-changing story. My collage and mixed media work is told in a language compiled through the layers and graphic elements of the paintings. The layering process is one I gravitate towards whether in mixed media, torn paper, digital images, sound or video. As I work through the process, things that were relevant in the past become less so as I moved forward.

The layering allows for the elements of typography, calligraphy, photography, computer skills and applications-old and new to enter the work; in the effort of expressing myself visually. Although the paintings occasionally include a narrative, that narrative is suppressed - to allow interpretation by the viewer.

I've read that the process of acceptance is an integral part of art and life. Accepting that this is where my life is and what it is about right now and being okay with it is a part of the process of art-making. I don't have to force anything beyond today. Trusting the process includes trusting what the paint, the brush strokes, the colors and the collaged elements are communicating. Not everything has to be planned out in detail, and in this process a language develops. The process is an essential part of art-making just as it is in life.
